Since it first glided into the rarified ranks of the world’s finest large, luxury sedans in 1994, the Audi A8 has epitomised all of the key elements of the Audi brand. A prestigious car offering absolute luxury and superb finish, showcasing the very latest in automotive technology, from design to construction, safety to driving experience. But the A8 L long wheelbase has also furthered its reputation with a spirited side not always associated with the top end of the luxury market. The level of performance and agility reaches the highest level in a class where customers often prefer to ride in the back.
The new A8 L continues the proud tradition built by its predecessors, but as always, adds significantly to the legacy. Most noticeably in the new model is the sharp new styling giving a distinctive new elegant look with an aggressive edge. The wider Audi Singleframe grille accentuates the already significant width of the car at 1.95 metres. It immediately catches the attention with a completely new design.
At the front, the new Digital Matrix LED headlights represent the state-of-the-art in automotive lighting with their Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) technology. 1.3 million micromirrors in each headlight break down the light of a particularly powerful LED into tiny pixels for ultimate precision. Orientating the lights, the headlights emit a carpet of light that illuminates brightly the driver’s own lane. The digital Matrix LED headlights can generate dynamic coming home/leaving home illuminations upon unlocking and getting out of the car. They shine like projections on the ground or a wall. At the rear, digital OLED lights express different lighting signatures.
Visibly, the Audi A8 L is a big car, measuring 5.32 metres in length, with a three-metre wheelbase allowing plenty of room space, and yet, despite its grand presence, it manages to look sporty, with is coupe-like roofline and the muscular wheel arches housing 19-inches alloy rims in 15-spoke “Y” design fitted on 255/45 R 19 tires.
The new A8 L launches with the V6 3.0 TFSI petrol engine boasting Cylinder On Demand (COD) technology. The A8 L 55 TFSI up the ante to 250kW delivering 340 horsepower. From 1,370 to 4,500 rpm, it pumps 500 Nm of torque into the crankshaft. From a standing start, it reaches 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
Audi drive select integrates the adaptive air suspension, the eight-speed tiptronic, the servotronic power steering, the Audi pre sense basic safety system and the engine control unit. The system modifies the characteristics of the shock absorbers, the air springs and the accelerator, and adapts the shift points, power steering boost, and the trigger time for the belt tensioners. The driver can vary the function of these components between the three modes “comfort,” “auto” and “dynamic.” Drivers can – within certain limits – also compose an “individual” mode corresponding to their own personal ideal by choosing settings from the portfolio.
In addition to cruise control, tire pressure control display, start/Stop system with regenerative braking energy recovery, driving assistance systems also include the Audi virtual cockpit, Head-up display, parking aid plus with 360 cameras. Safety is ensured pre-sense basic safety system, electronic vehicle immobilization device, anti-theft alarm, full size side airbags in front and rear including curtain, ISOFIX child seat mounting, ensure safety as well as first aid kit with warning triangle and safety vests.
Special care has been dedicated to all individual contour comfort seats in Valcona leather. Comfort features electrically adjustable lumbar support with seat ventilation and massage for front and outer rear seats. The front seats come with memory and a centre armrest. At the rear, separate power rear seats feature a compact center console with remote control of seat relaxation massage, lighting and dimming via a 5.7-inches full-HD OLED display. The front passenger seat can be adjusted from the sumptuous rear seats.
Infotainment is easily operated with the Multi Media Interface Navigation Plus with MMI touch response via two large touchscreen displays (10.1-inches top / 8.6-inches bottom) over a black glass look with haptic feedback. Rear seat entertainment is ensured over two 10-inches full-HD display conveniently removable tablets.
